Working Group to support an Inter Religious Campaign against Malaria in Mozambique March 16, 2006 A meeting was convened by the Center for Global Justice and Reconciliation at the Washington National Cathedral on March 16, 2006, for an inter religious campaign against malaria in Mozambique. The meeting was attended by representatives from the Episcopal, Seventh Day Adventist, United Methodist and Catholic churches, Islamic relief organization, media organizations , USAID, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, UN Foundation, World Bank and the U.S. National Library of Medicine. His Excellency Armando Panguene, Ambassador of Mozambique to the United States, was also present. The Right Reverend Dinis Sengulane, Bishop of Lebombo, Anglican Church of Mozambique, the Right Reverend Joao Machado, Bishop of the United Methodist Church of Mozambique and Mr. Hassan Makda, Chairman, Islamic Council of Mozambique joined by conference call from Mozambique and pressed for urgent action to defeat the scourge of malaria. A Working Group was formed to assist the religious leaders in Mozambique to prepare a large scale campaign against malaria. The Working Group will identify and access the financial, human, program, communication and management resources needed for the task. The religious leaders in Mozambique will identify the needs and direct the work which will build on the existing anti-malaria programs like Roll Back Malaria. Jean Duff, Managing Director, Center for Global Justice and Reconciliation will lead the Working Group which includes Cherian Thomas, Executive Secretary, Health & Welfare, United Methodist Church; Ray Dabrowski, Director of Communications, Seventh Day Adventist Church; Janette O'Neill, Senior Program Director for Africa, Episcopal Relief & Development (ERD); Rabia Mathai, Senior Vice President, Global Program Policy, Planning, Strategic Partnerships, Catholic Medical Mission Board (CMMB) and Wendell Belew, Friends of Charities Association (representing Islamic relief organizations). Representatives from USAID, CDC and the UN Foundation agreed to serve as advisors. Sonny Fox, President, Sonny Fox Consultants, Bill Ryerson, Director, Population Media Center and Catherine Hand of Hand and Associates will focus on mass communications strategies. The Working Group's first task is to work with the religious leaders in Mozambique to prepare an action plan that will be discussed at a meeting on April 19th in Maputo prior to Africa Malaria Day on April 25th.
