Saudi Arabia starts marathon donations campaign

Fri Jan 7 2005

Saudi citizens and residents have contributed a sum of SR308,000 to the victims of the earthquake and the tsunami floods that have hit parts of south and Southeast Asia. Leading the donors was the leadership of Saudi Arabia, at the head of whom was the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Fahd bin Abdul Aziz, who kicked off the campaign and donated SR20 million, followed by Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz, who donated SR10 million, while the Second Deputy Premier and Minister of Defense and Aviation, Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz, donated SR5 million. Donations from other citizens and residents included not only cash, but also jewelry, medicines, clothes, and ambulances. Previously, Saudi Arabia had the honor to start donation campaigns during disasters or crises in friendly and brotherly countries, such as those of Palestine, Bosnia-Herzegovina. Kosovo, and several others in other parts of the world.

For its part, the Makkah-based Muslim World League (MWL) has called upon Muslim countries to hasten in their response to the tsunami disaster victims, and lauded the initiative taken by the Saudi leadership in launching a funds-drive to collect funds and other type of aid for the victims.
